Isolation, Characterization and Screening for Antimicrobial Activities of Psychrotolerant Streptomycetes Isolated from Polar Permafrost Soil

چکیده
Ninety one streptomycetes strains were isolated from permafrost soil in Spitsbergen, Arctic Ocean. Five of them showed antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive, Gram-negative bacteria, yeasts and fungi. The strains were psychrotolerant with growth at temperatures between 4oC and 28oC. Morphological, physiological and biochemical characterizations were investigated and the starins could be affiliated to the same genus. Antibiotic production of the strains was investigated at 4oC and the active compouds were isolated from the culture filtrate. Strong activity of the isolated compounds against bacteria, yeast and fungi was detected.

Abstract Bachground and objectives:Streptomyces is the most important genus in Actinomycetes family. The Streptomycetes are widely used in industry producing numerous chemical compounds including antibiotics, enzymes and anti- tumor agents. The aim of this study was to isolate soil-borne Streptomyces producing antimicrobial substances from soil of Golestan province of Iran and to survey anti-fun...
متن کاملStreptomycetes: Characteristics and Their Antimicrobial Activities
The Streptomycetes are gram positive bacteria with a filamentous form that present in a wide variety of soil including composts, water and plants. The most characteristic of Streptomycetes is the ability to produce secondary metabolites such as antibiotics. They produce over two-thirds of the clinically useful antibiotics of natural origin (e.g., neomycin and chloramphenicol. Another characteri...
متن کاملIsolation and Characterisation of Actinobacteria from Algerian Sahara Soils with Antimicrobial Activities
Extreme ecosystems can be a source of untapped micro-organisms able to produce novel bioactive compounds of industrial interest. Consequently, in this work, 32 Actinomycetes were isolated from 6 soil samples collected from Algerian Sahara in searching for untapped producers of novel antimicrobial compounds. All the isolates were further subjected to antimicrobial screening against pathogenic ba...
